Sepilok is short for the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, a lowland dipterocarp forest which measures some, 4,294 hectares in area, comprising of mainly virgin primary lowland forest and some mangrove swamps. This Forest Reserve, only 25 km from the center of the city of Sandakan, was set aside many decades ago primary for the rehabilitation of displaced and orphaned Orange Utans ( man of the jungle) a critically threatened member of the primate order, to which we belong.
There are 12 species of primates in the jungle of Borneo, all of which are tree dwelling, and the orang utan is the largest of them all. Other commonly observed species include the tarsiers, slow lorises, monkeys and gibbons.
Today, there are approximately 60-80 rehabilitated orang utans stacking out their territories in the reserve, with a significant number of displaced and orphaned youngs being cared for until they are mature enough to be released into the wild.

The Rehabilitation Center on the western fringe of the reserve is where one can watch the wild orang utans come swinging in for their daily feed of bananas. It must be mentioned that in recent years, an initiative to conserve the sun bear has taken hold in the same rehabilitation center, and one should not miss the opportunity to see the sun bear in their large enclosure which constructed to present them with a temporary habitat as close to their natural habitat as possible.
